Butter Coffee? Ever heard of it? Why put butter in your coffee? I make this every morning in my Instagram stories, but here I wanted to explain WHY and the benefits of doing it!
First, you should ONLY use grass-fed ghee or coconut oil. These 2 fats have the RIGHT fats that regulate cholesterol, not add to it. It also has the best ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (which reduces body fat) and is a good source of vitamin K, both of which according to a studies reduce the risk of heart disease.
Second, putting plain milk or cream reduces the amount of catechins, a type of antioxidant found in coffee. By eliminating milk in your coffee, you get 3 – 4 times more antioxidants because casein, the milk protein, binds to the catechins and makes them unavailable. (grass-fed, clarified butter [ghee] does not contain casein).
And last, drinking butter coffee each morning puts your body in the routine to burn fat all day, helping you trim down overall. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), found in ghee, has been shown to reduce body fat mass especially in overweight individuals.
TO MAKE IT FROTHY:
I always add 1 Tbsp of Further Food’s Grass-Fed and Pasture Raised Gelatin….but the froth is just icing on the cake to the health benefits.
It Improves Gut Health and Digestion!
Similarly to collagen, gelatin is beneficial for preventing intestinal damage and improving the lining of the digestive tract, thereby preventing permeability and leaky gut syndrome. The gut lining is one of the body’s most important lines of defense, since it keeps particles from food, bacteria and yeast inside the digestive system where they belong and prevents leakage into the bloodstream, which triggers inflammation.
Click HERE for more gelatin benefits:
• Improves skin health
• Protects joints and lowers joint pain
• Lifts your mood
• Maintains strong bones
• Helps improve sleep quality
• Aids in heart health
• High in protein (see below)
Approx. 1 1/2 Tbsp contains 18g of protein and 75 calories.
MY BUTTER COFFEE RECIPE:
Ingredients:
16 oz warm coffee (not super hot)
1 tsp grass-fed ghee (I love using Mt Capra goat milk ghee because it not only taste better – in my opinion – but you digest it easier since it’s from grass fed goats!)
1 scoop gelatin
Directions:
1. Blend coffee and ghee in blender (I use my Vitamix) a few seconds.
-
Turn off blender, remove lid, then turn on blender on the lowest speed.
-
While blender is on lowest speed, add gelatin. Secure lid then slowly increase speed to the highest and give it one quick “wiz” on high. *Do not blend too long or it will over whip.
-
Pour coffee in cup and let it sit a minute. The froth will rise to the top.
I have gastritis and I limit my coffee intake to twice a week only (just 1 cup on two non-consecutive days), and it’s usually after breakfast. I found this is the amount my stomach tolerates after years of testing it myself, since I used to have 2-3 cups of coffee a day before I was diagnosed. With that being said, I’m wondering if trying the bulletproof coffee with collagen or gelatin BEFORE breakfast would cause me to have a flare up, or if it would offset the irritating properties of the coffee. Would you mind sharing your thoughts? Thanks in advance!
P.S. I follow you on IG and I just love the fact that you provide all the info necessary when explaining why you do the things you do (e.g. benefits of cooking a certain way, or why you eat certain foods over other ones, etc). ? I’m sure there’s a bunch of us out there who benefit from all your posts, so thank you for that!
Hi Lily,
Thank you for all your support on IG, as well as on my blog. Each person is different so I suggest trying it, and if it doesn’t work for you then limit your intake. No one body is the same. 🙂
I read that you don’t stick to any coffee brand in particular, but would love to know what brands you are currently using. I’ve been wanting to try the “bulletproof” coffee, but have heard something about coffee and something related to mold… do you know anything about this?
Hi Denise,
Yes there are links to coffee and mold and each body reacts differently to it. You will always find some article about everything saying it’s “good” and saying it’s “bad”. I’ve personally benefited from coffee however I do find that I need to take breads for a week at a time just to mix things up and reset m adrenal glands. The bulletproof coffee is just a brand and I don’t buy into it…it’s just marketing. IF you get an organic, whole bean coffee that’s fine.
Misspositivity85 here! Just curious on your thoughts about subbing organic coconut cream for the oil/butter? I also added a little cacao… thought the more antioxidants the better, right?
I leave out cacao powder, and you can sub coconut oil but not cream
DAMN GIRL!!!! Who needs a latte when you have this AMAZEBALLS recipe??? Wow! got some VP gelatin on your recommendation just to make this recipe and boy am i glad i did!!! SOOOOOOO creamy and delicious!!
Haha Glad you enjoy it Mona! It’s the only way I can have coffee now, any other way is just a disappointment lol
What kind of coffee do you use?
I don’t stick to a particular brand, but I usually go for light roast
Does all creamer take away catechins? i drink coffee three times a day with almond milk (Soy Milk brand) does that make a difference? Also where do I find ghee in my local stores, if I cant find it would coconut oil work the same? This article was really helpful thank you!!
just dairy…almond milk is fine but I never add it because the ghee works as “creamer”. YOu can use coconut oil as well, and just ask your grocer where to find ghee in their store.
So so so excited to try this!!
I hope you like it Mellie! I can’t have coffee any other way! haha
its me..#georgethecat2015… so glad you have this incredibly valuable blog going❣️It’s perfect for looking up everything and anything❣️Love the quick search options and everything about this❣️ omg ? I know I’m over “❣️” but I can’t say enough about you and your valuable info♥️… thank you Bethany♥️♥️♥️
Awww Thank you so very much Christina! I am so happy you’re enjoying the blog!
Can you use the vital proteins beef collagen instead of the gelatin? Are the benefits for gut health the same? Thank you for the info!
yes you can, but the frothiness won’t be the same
I’ve got to try the matcha recipe since I don’t drink coffee. But is there really something special about the bullet proof brand coffee?
no, it’s just a brand hun 🙂
I don’t drink coffee…could this be good with herbal tea?
I’ve done it with matcha and it’s great! The recipe is under “drinks”
I’ve been making this every morning for months and have noticed SUCH amazing benefits to my gut, hair, and skin! I’ve done it with coconut butter and butter and I love them both!
This is SUCH an AWESOME recipe and recommend it to everyone!
That’s wonderful to hear Gen! I love it too and so many others have expressed the same!
Love it..!!!! you are the best..:)
